Frequently Asked Questions

Why see a Biokineticist?

With a biokineticist you have the opportunity to train with a specialized exercise therapist that functions in a holistic manner with other professionals and health specialists. A biokineticist is registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa and is also a member of the Biokinetics Association of South Africa. Therefore, a biokineticist is fully qualified and registered to give rehabilitation related advice.

What can I expect?

We start with an initial one-hour consultation and thorough assessment. During the initial consultation, a full medical and orthopedic history will be taken and the condition will be discussed thoroughly. The biokineticist will perform appropriate tests to obtain a better picture of where the weaknesses or imbalances are. Based on these findings and the consultation a treatment plan will be discussed in detail.

What happens during the consultation?

A variety of assessments, depending on the conditions, will be done during the evaluation. Hereafter a treatment plan will be drawn up accordingly. These assessments include a range of functional movements to determine muscle strength and/or flexibility imbalances as well as to identify instability and faulty biomechanics. Hereafter, an exercise program specific to the clinical pathology will be prescribed.

How many sessions do I need to do?

The number of sessions with the biokineticist will vary from person to person, depending on what your goals are. The aim will be to provide you with the most effective and efficient treatment plan.

What are the costs?

Treatment costs are based on medical aid tariffs which are both reasonable and market-related. The appointment rates can be discussed during the initial consultation.

Invoices for accounts are generated at the end of each month. You are welcome to settle your bill via cash, card, geo-payment (FNB clients only) or electronic fund transfer (EFT).

Will the medical aid pay for sessions and how will the claims work?

The practice is registered with most of the medical aid funds in South Africa. The services can be claimed from your medical aid savings or day-to-day account on a monthly basis. Some medical aids have a specific benefit set out for biokinetic treatment. However, it remains your responsibility to ensure the scheme-specific requirements accompany the claim. For example, some medical aids require a referral letter from a medical doctor or specialist to be able to use the benefit.

Is a referral letter needed to see a biokineticist?

You do not have to be referred by a medical or healthcare professional to see a biokineticist. However, some medical aids require a referral letter to activate a benefit that can pay for biokinetic treatment.
